What is the best translation of The Aeneid?

For most readers, the Robert Fagles translation (2006) of The Aeneid is the best place to start: Fagles did for the Aeneid what he did for Homer — a fast, vivid, dramatic English that carries you through. He expands Virgil's lines a little for momentum, so it's not the most economical version, but for a first read it's the most propulsive, and Bernard Knox's introduction is excellent. This is where I'd start. For most literal, consider Sarah Ruden (2008). For newest, consider Shadi Bartsch (2021). For most lyrical, consider Robert Fitzgerald (1983). For the free classic, consider John Dryden (1697).
