For most readers, the David Luke translation (1987) of Faust is the best place to start: David Luke's Oxford translation won the European poetry-translation prize and is the standard — rhymed verse that keeps Goethe's meaning without going archaic or slangy, about as close to an 'equivalent' as English gets. Part One is where you start (Part Two is a separate volume). This is where I'd start. For german alongside, consider Walter Kaufmann (1961). For strong alternative, consider Martin Greenberg (1992). For the free classic, consider Bayard Taylor (1870).
